Moms of autistic kids pay price in workplaceMoms who care for autistic kids face
greater demands on time.
A study was done by Washington State University with 326
families in Washington and Oregon. The study found that mothers of children with autism see their careers negatively affected because of greater demands on time and inflexible workplaces and increased medical costs. Approximately half of the women worked fewer hours so they could care for their autistic child. About three out of five had not taken a job because of their autistic child. In order to take care of their child 25% took a leave of absence and passed on a promotion. In households where two parents were working two-thirds of the couples said it was the mother’s employment that was most affected by their child’s autism. The study showed that negative effects are more likely to be experienced by the mother.
