Canadians caught in a worsening "time crunch," study suggests

Work-life balance absent in the lives of Canadians today in comparison to a decade ago.
Photo: timeThe Canadian Index of Wellbeing study has found that Canadians are having a difficult time separating workplace and home life.   New technologies like email, BlackBerrys, and iPhones keep employees connected to their job past work hours.

The study found that women face more time pressures than men (23 % versus 17%).  The group most `time crunched` was single parents with young children.

The difficulty comes with trying to please employers who have the ability to contact you 24/7 when you have to care for children and aging parents and refueling for the next workday.  Consequences of this include reduced healthy (physically and mentally) and absence of time for leisure and relaxation.

It was found that over the last 15 years Canadians have become more and more dissatisfied with the quality of their lives.

Lack of child care, long commutes between work and home, and expensive leisure activities were some of the stress factors found in the study.

Findings in the report:

• Those experience increased `time crunch` increased from 16% in 1992 to 20% in 2005

• Working-age adults caring for seniors increased from  17.4% in 1996 to 19.5% in 2006

• 28% of working Canadians were responsible for child and elder care in 2009

• The percentage of teenagers who ate together with their parents decreased from 64% in 1992 to 35% in 2005.

• 29% of Canadians worked weekends, nights and rotating shifts in 2009; in 1992 it was 23%

• Leisure activity participation decreased from 15% in 1998 to 12% in 2005.
