Bullying at work worse than gender, racial harassment: ReportA study from Queen's
University suggests workplace bullying is more damaging than racial or sexual harassment.
Ontario is ready to pass
Bill 168 making workplace harassment illegal. As steps are being taken to pass Bill 168, research
suggests that workplace bullying is worse than racial or gender harassment. Queen’s University looked at approximately 735 employees over a time frame of four weeks. Participants were required to complete two surveys. The first survey was on measures of harassment and demographics. Four weeks later, the second survey was completed. This survey touched on job attitudes, turnover intentions, psychological well-being and health. The research found that Caucasians are more likely to experience workplace harassment than minorities. As well, women were not more likely to experience gender harassment or workplace harassment than men. What makes general workplace harassment worse is that it is not illegal like gender or ethnic harassment. In addition, there are not many options for victims of general workplace harassment.
