Being the new employee in an economic downturn

Key highlights from the WSJ article:

  • New staffers who join those who have survived layoffs or cutbacks might find those existing employees wary of Newcomers and resentful of the extra workload they've had to take on during the downturn. That can make it difficult for new employees to fit in and be productive;
  • "Anxiety is an emotion that's easily picked up from others," says Paul Baard, a professor at Fordham University and a workplace psychologist;
  • A demoralized workplace can be factionalized, so it's important not to take sides "Stay out of the conflicts,", says Margaret Morford, president of HR Edge, a management and training consultancy
  • Workplace survivors view everyone as competition;
  • Go to lunch with your coworkers - one-on-one to get reall connections going;

Finally, realize that it can take up to four months to get an accurate picture of your new workplace, so give it a chance.
