Study Finds Workplace Breast-Cancer RisksMaterials found in certain workplaces can
boost the risk of breast cancer, a new study finds.
A study done by The Institut de Recherche Robert-Sauve en Sante et en
Securite du Travail (IRSST) in Quebec, Canada, found that when women are exposed to certain materials in the
workplace it can increase the risk of breast cancer. The study found women who were exposed to some organic solvents and agents before their mid-30s have an increased risk of developing breast cancer after menopause. The study involved researchers working with industrial hygienists and chemist to look at the job histories and exposure to 300 work site materials of two groups of women. One group consisted of 556 women with breast cancer and other group consisted of 613 women with other cancers. Women aged 50 to 75 years old were part of the study groups. Main findings: - Exposure to certain materials increased the risk of breast cancer, especially when that exposure was before the age of 36. -Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are an example of a material that increased the risk of breast cancer. This material is found in aluminum production, ocal gasification, iron and feel foundries to name a few. -There needs to be dialogue and open communication between HR executives and health and safety staff. Edwin G. Foulke Jr., formerly the assistant secretary of labor at the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration offers some advice about avoiding problems. He says organizations can face legal liabilities from having health hazardous chemicals in the workplace. Worker’s compensation claims can be filed if as a result too because it can be considered a work-related injury. Foulke also says organizations should also consider training employees so they are aware of what to watch out for. Another suggestion Foulke offers is rotating employees from job to job so exposure to hazardous materials can be limited.
