Companies respond differently to increasing use of social networks

Social networking sites, to use or not to use? That is the question!
Social networking sites are becoming increasingly used in the workplace, not just for personal use but for business purposes as well.

A study don’t by Robert Half Technology was released yesterday showing that employers do not agree on how to deal with social networking.  There is a lot of confusion regarding whether social networking sites help or hurt the functioning of an organization.

The study involved 270 chief information officers in companies across Canada who had at least 100 employees.  They were asked about policy changes they have made regarding social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter despite them becoming increasingly used as business tools.

Main findings from the study:

-    21% said they have become more strict about the personal use of social networking sites at work

-    14% said they have become more lenient about personal use

-    15% said they are more strict regarding access to social networking sites even if it is for business purposes

-    10% are allowing more usage for business purposes

-    48% have made no changes

-    2% did not know or had no answer about social networking

The director of technical services for Robert Half, Jennifer Cowland, stated there are advantages and disadvantages with using social networking at work, for personal and business purposes, however it is the organization that has to decide if it works for them.

The disadvantages that come with allowing employees to use social networking sites at work is it decreases productivity and increases the chance of an employee saying something that could jeopardize the reputation of the organization.

However, there are advantages as well; it gives employees a chance to interact with people who are working in the same industry as them.

In terms of business purposes it is a great marketing tool and method to interact with customers.  The risk is communicating confidential information about the organization.
