Texting lingo shows up at office

Speech genre; Set limits but don't discourage young employees
Texting, something that has become very popular in recent times.  With texting comes texting shortcuts, these shortcuts are popping up in everyday communication, even in the workplace.

"There are these discreet, almost distinct speech genres appropriate for different situations, at the same time they always overlap and influence one another and there is overflow from one into the other," says Ms. Bakardjieva, a professor of communication at the University of Calgary.

Most people recognize how to communicate in different situations with a specific culture.  However, some people have a difficult time determining what’s appropriate in the workplace.

According to a study done by Robert Half Technology about 42% of 270 chief information officers, who have 100 or more employees, stated the number of people who break workplace etiquette has increased because of mobile electronic gadgets.

According to Robert Half’s Canadian president Megan Slabinski, productivity has increased as a result of electronic gadgets, but it has also caused interruptions.

The study detailed some examples.  One example was people who text or email during a meeting and think it is efficient to do so.

The above proves that there is a new genre of communication has come about as a result of technology.

Employers need to set guidelines about what is appropriate and what is not.  Nevertheless employers need to remember that this is how younger generations communicate and it is how they get their tasks accomplished.
