Mr. Nice Guy could be dragging down your workplace productivityIf your employees
aren’t being honest, bold and impatient, your company may be missing opportunities to make the team better.
According to management experts being too nice can be a disadvantage to an organization. The president of Mississauga management consulting firm HR Impact, Fiorella Callocchia, says that niceness is a common workplace problem. Especially since the Canadian culture is one that is conservative and risk-adverse. Most managers hesitate to tell employees the truth about how they feel. Rather than deal with a potential conflict they just smile and don’t complain. People also avoid being rude because they don’t want to: interfere with other people’s problems, hurt their feelings, or seem like a poor group member. Right now with the economic recession cooperating with others is what employees assume should be done in order to keep their job. When managers are not giving feedback even if it is negative they are preventing employees from improving their performance. The situation can occur the other way around, in which case the employer cannot improve their organization’s weaknesses. Niceness can lead to others taking advantage of you and possibly exploiting you; nice people should proceed with caution. Impatience can be an advantage and disadvantage in the workplace. Impatience can lead to poor decision making, but it can also push people to perform better. Telling people the truth is the better way to go for both employees’ and the organization’s success!
