Health Promotion Program Helps Reduce Risks for Truck Drivers

A program incorporating Web-based education and other approaches can help reduce the high health and safety risks faced by truck drivers.

Ryan Olson, Ph.D., and colleagues of Oregon Health and Science University developed a new type of health promotion program for truck drivers.

Their program includes various approaches such as web-based health and driving safety courses, a safe driving competition and motivational phone interviews with health counselors.

This is perfect for truck drivers because most of them use laptop computers and cell phones to keep in touch while they are on the road.

The differences in employee health were noticeable.  For example, after 6 months in the program truck drivers lost about 8 pounds.  These drivers also improved their eating habits and engaged in more physical activity.

The safety part of the web program helped reduce risky driving behaviors of truck drivers.

The program is great for those who are employed in a job that requires them to spend significant amount of time alone.  These employees usually do not have access to workplace wellness programs.

The web-based program is a step in the right direction.  This type of wellness programming is important to reach employees who do not work in conventional workplace environments.  It is also a way to engage and retain these employees.
