Everyday people expose themselves to a number of toxins in their environment, whether at home, at work, or even on your way to work.

Janel C. Parham a registered nurse at Sinai Hospital in the United states offers the following tips about to decrease your exposure to toxins at work and at home:

• Water supply:  Educate yourself on drinking water and the acceptable levels of substances that can be found in water.  Look in municipal water reports and find out what the acceptable levels of substances and what was actually found in the water.  Another option is to test the water yourself with a home testing water kit.

• Cleaning products:  Go for cleaning agents that are more plant-based.   Parham says try baking soda and vinegar.

• Healthy foods:  Whenever possible buy organic, pesticide residue can have negative health effects.  Read labels and try to find the healthiest items when  shopping.

• Lawn care: Look into green alternatives before spraying the lawn with toxic chemicals.

Beauty and health products: When purchasing beauty and health products try to buy more natural versions.  “Cosmetics, lotions, shampoos, conditioners and other similar products can all contain toxins” says Parham.

• Secondhand smoke:  When someone is smoking around, distance yourself.  If there is an individual in your household who smokes make sure they go outside to do so.

Parham also advises people to be careful when purchasing product.  She says there is a lot of false advertising out there.

Parham also offered the following tips for employers to encourage healthier lifestyles:

• Employers who have onsite cafeterias should offer healthier foods and provide nutritional information.

• If employers have a newsletter they should provide employees with information about healthy eating, energy-efficient products, and less toxic products.

• Providing employees with a smoking cessation program can help eliminate toxins that come from smoking and help employees lead a healthier lifestyle.

• Composting at work is a great way to reduce waste and decrease waste disposal costs.  Use products that will breakdown in a compost pile.
