Examining Workplace Styles of the Sexes

Businesses Urged to Harness the Power of Difference for More Effective Team Management
Photo: team

A survey was recently done on the working styles of men and women.  The survey called ‘Style of the Sexes’ looked at such things as which factors are important in a job to men and women, if they share their job concerns with fellow employees, and whether or not they like to work in teams of mostly men or women.

The survey found that 45% of employed women believed that ‘women have to be better than men to succeed in the workplace.’  On the other hand, 26% of men believed that this statement was true.

The survey also looked at the importance of ability compared to personality in the workplace.  Approximately 53% of men thought ability was more important than personality, while 39% of women thought the same.

Although there are differences between women and men in terms of their work, it is how the workplace itself deals with these differences and how they bring out the best in their employees despite these differences.

When it came to the makeup of teams 88% of men and women preferred to work in equally mixed teams.  If the situation arose that a team was made up of mostly females only 8.1% of men and women liked this situation compared to 21.6% who didn’t mind working in a team made up mostly of males.

The survey found that women are more demanding in comparison to men about what is important in a job.

Key Findings:

-    79% of women and 73% of men say training is important

-    75% of women and 69% of men seek flexible hours

-    More men than women believe promotions and benefits beyond pay are important

-    Women found the following important in a job: pay, equipment, interesting job role, flexibility in work location or the ability to work from home.

-    Men found the following important in a job: pay and equipment, interesting role, flexible work location or the ability to work from home.

-    55% of women and 46% of men experienced conflict in the workplace

-     41% of women and 25% of men needed more than a month to recover from a conflict

-    73% of men and 63% of women would confront a situation face to face

-    59% of women and 52% of men are likely to talk to their manager about a problem

-    39% of women and 35% of men are likely to report the situation to human resources

-    75% of women and 67% of men share work concerns with colleagues.

An important strategy for a business to succeed is to overcome employee differences and concentrate on how those differences can be dealt with.
