Preventing And Responding To Harassment Issues In The Workplace

Tips on dealing with and responding to workplace harassment.
http://www.ottawabusinessjournal.com/295738983973554.php

No employer wants to deal with harassment in their workplace.  So what is the best way to avoid harassment in the workplace, prevention and response.  Making sure harassment does not occur to begin with is the best path an employer can take.

Prevention

Employers should be aware of their work environment.  They should have a good understanding of how their employees work and deal with workplace conflict.

Employers also need to make sure their workplace is a safe, harassment-free environment, without intimidation or verbal abuse.

Employers should outline what behavior is acceptable in their company code of conduct or company policies. Employers should make sure people are following the rules.

Another way to prevent workplace harassment is to not give any particular employee too much power and autonomy.  There are more chances for a wrongdoing to occur.

Responding to Complaints

Sometimes despite the precautions that are taken harassment can still occur. It is important for an organization to respond genuinely to all complaints.  This may be difficult for supervisors and  managers because they usually have a close relationship with human resources.

It is important to whoever is receiving the complaint to not take sides and to resolve the conflict.

Employers should also have a method for employees to comfortably report complaints without being fearful.
