The cardinal sins employees commit

Employees who use work time to pursue outside personal or business interests; to surf the Internet, socialize or take excessive smoke breaks are abusing their employer's trust.
When an organization hires an individual they are under the assumption that the individual will give the organization their undivided loyalty and attention.

However, when employees put their own interests before employers’ expectations then a conflict of interest arises.

It has been found that Canadian employers are usually laid back about an employee’s conflict of interest.

When employers ignore certain employees' conflict of interest, it is affecting workplace morale and productivity.  The employees who do take their work seriously may feel angered by those who are slacking off.

Another way a conflict of interest can take form is when an employee makes a business decision and it could benefit themselves, their friends or family members.

In order to solve the above problem employers should consider writing up policies detailing definitions and examples of conflict of interests.  They should also outline the consequences of violating the policies.
