Mental Health in the Workplace

World Mental Health Day - October 10, 2009.
Photo: mental healthAn area of the workplace that the economic recession has taken its toll on is the mental health of employees.

World Mental Health Day is taking place on October 10, 2009.    This is a great way for employer and employees to become aware and educated on mental health issues.

Numerically speaking, mental illness affects about one in five Canadians.  The most common form mental illnesses take is depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

Mental illness has a significant impact on the workplace.  About 500 000 Canadian workers miss work due to mental health problems.

Mental illness costs the Canadian economy about $51 billion each year.

Here are a few tips to address mental health in the workplace:

-Recognize that mental health issues do exist in the workplace.

-Equip workplaces with the right tools to recognize and address mental health in the workplace.

-People are an organization's most important assets, so make sure the necessary attention is given to their psychological needs.

Addressing mental health issues can promote a healthy workplace.  By providing employees with resources and motivation, people can adopt a healthy lifestyle to ensure their mental health at work and at home.
