Workplace, Facebook an uneasy mix: studyProceeding with caution when it comes to
Facebook in the workplace.
A new survey found that business executives feel uneasy about mixing business with
pleasure on Facebook. The survey was done through phone interviews with 100 senior executives randomly chosen across Canada. The survey was done by International Communication Research. Approximately 72% of employees say they are hesitant to accept friend requests from staff members they manage and 69% feel uncomfortable becoming friends with their bosses on Facebook. The survey found that about 38% are not comfortable at all adding co-workers to their network. "The line between personal and professional has grown increasingly blurred as more people use social networking websites for business purposes," said Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam, the staffing service that developed the survey, in a release. "Although not everyone is comfortable using sites like Facebook to connect with professional contacts, it's wise to be prepared for these types of requests." Hosking proposes that employees determine if their Facebook habits are in agreement with their organization’s policies regarding social networking websites. He also suggests that people set up different settings to create multiple friend lists, depending on whether the individuals are co-workers or personal friends. People should also be cautious of what others may see on their profiles, for example, personal information, photos, music preferences and group affiliations. For bosses, Hosking recommends “thinking twice about befriending a person in a managerial role in case the office dynamic should change or roles shift, creating an awkward situation.” Read more here Posted by: suhujitha on 2009-08-21 09:13:34 Next post: High levels of burnout among UK family doctors, especially in group practice 2012-01-31 08:59:19 Other posts tagged coworkers, social networking, polls:
