Stressed out managers cause ripple effect

Organizations should take care of front- line and middle managers as they may be *canaries in the coal mine* for other employees health and wellbeing, says new research from Hewitt.

Hewitt conducted a study on the Best Employers in Canada recently and it investigated the linkage between engagement and health and wellbeing.  Hewitt collected the opinions of approximately 115 000 employees at more than 200 employers.

The study measured the engagement score at each organization, and compared that to data from employees regarding their health and wellbeing.

It is commonly believed among HR professionals that higher engagement leads to increased health and productivity, but they do not have the statistics to back it up, states Rochelle Morandini, national lead with Hewitt’s organizational health practice.

The study’s results reveal that high employee engagement is related to improved organizational results, especially in terms of employee health and wellbeing.

Highly engaged employees report lower job-related stress, better physical health, lower absenteeism, and increased productivity.

Organizations that have a high engagement score report lower disability and workers’ compensation costs.

Organizations that had a high engagement scores reported 6.92 days of absence per employee, while organizations that had low engagement scores reported 12.99 days of absence per employee.

Companies with high engagement scores reported workers’ compensation premiums of $654 per employee.  On the other hand companies with low engagement scores reported premiums of $900 per employee.

“A lot of employers already invest in these programs but to truly get a return on investment you want to do the basics well and make sure you’re targeting the employee population in a way you know they’ll participate,” says Morandini. “Communication is really key.”

Employees who were at high engagement organizations and those at low engagement organizations varied in their responses to the statement “it is easy to take advantage of the programs that support maintaining/improving my health.”  Seventy percent of employees at highly engaged organizations agreed while only 50% of employees at low engagement organizations agreed.

“Not communicating is detrimental to the investments you make in health programs,” says Morandini.
