Healthy eating at work

Tips for keeping up healthy eating behaviors at work.

Most of us do not think about our food and activity choices once we get to work.  We are just too busy to do so, but this can have an impact on our health and wellness.  By eating healthy foods it increase your productivity and energy, manage stress, and help you stay focused.  It can also improve your health and fitness levels.

Here are some tips to help make healthy choices at work:

Plan ahead: The best thing to do is to prepare healthy lunches the day before (salads with lean protein, sandwiches on grain bread with chicken or turkey breast, skim cheese and veggies are all simple, good ideas). If you do not like to pack your lunch then make an effort to find places that offer truly healthy options.  Ask for nutritional information if it isn’t already provided for you.

Keep nutritious snacks on hand: Fruit, almonds, single-serve yogurts, skim cheese and crackers are all great ideas. Having healthy snacks with you will help you avoid unhealthy choices like chips and chocolate bars from vending machines.

Stay hydrated:  Keep a glass or bottle of water at your desk and drink it throughout the day.

Advocate healthy eating:  Inquire about introducing healthier selections in the vending machines, having fruit bowls around the office, and requesting that catered meetings have healthy options.

Make smart drink choices:  Avoid pop and instead go for water, flavored sugar-free seltzers or herbal teas.  Pure fruit juice is another great alternative.

Get moving:  Replace your coffee break with a walking break.  Invite your co-workers to join you.  Stretch throughout the day.
