Tips for Life

Tactics for building resiliency in stressful times.

It is important to take care of your body and mind so that you are resilient enough to hand tough challenges. Here are some ways to help people become more resilient during stressful times:

Physical Activity:

Exercise is one of the best way to improve your mood, enhance you immune system, and keep your body in optimal condition.  It helps you clear your mind and listen to your body: its strengths, limitations, and needs.

Eat Supportive Foods:

People know that a healthy well-balanced diet with plenty of water and sufficient rest are important ingredients for good health.  However, not many people know the benefits and effects of these things on mental health.

A survey was conducted recently by British mental health group MIND.  Participants were asked to eat a diet that avoided 'food stressors' like sugar and caffeine and instead told to eat a diet that was rich in 'food supporters' (including water, fruits, and vegetables). Of these participants, 88% who did participate believed that the new eating regime had greatly improved their mental health.

Stock Up On Sleep:

Getting a good night's sleep regularly helps keep moodiness low, mental focus in check, and allows the body and its immune system to rejuvenate.  Getting a minimum of seven hours of sleep every night is good for the body.  In situations where this is not possible, take a short 20 minute nap to recharge your body and mind.

Sometimes You Just Have To Laugh:

Laughter is the best remedy for maintaining a healthy mind and body.  The results of laughter are  positive physiological responses.  For example, your heart rate goes up, blood circulation to the brain and body improves, and muscles become more relaxed.  It also signals your brain to release more endorphins, helping you feel more positive and calm.

Building a Support System:

A strong network is important during stressful times.  It helps people to survive and thrive during tough times.  Social networks help people maintain an essential and emotionally "nutritious" social circle.
