CEOs Out of Touch with Employee Mental Health Needs

The lack of awareness among executives of organizations on the impact of mental health issues.

A survey conducted by Mercer in partnership with The Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health on over 450 Canadian organizations found that mental health issues are becoming more important for employers.

Approximately 80 per cent reported that mental health issues have increased in importance compared to 3 to 5 years ago.

35 million workdays are lost as a result of mental illness every year in Canada.  Mental illness also results in lower productivity and is a major cost to employers.

The results of the survey showed that only 13% of senior executives have an awareness of the impact of mental health on the organization.  The results show that mental health is on the priority list of HR, but there is a lack of awareness among executives of organizations.

Respondents of the survey said that they had no plans or did not know how they would improve the awareness levels of the executive team.  The biggest obstacle standing in the way to get executives aware of this issue is that there is no measurement on the impact of mental health issues.

A study done by the Public Health Agency of Canada estimated that 13% of the adult population in Canada have either been diagnosed with a mental illness or are undiagnosed.

About 46% of survey respondents reported that they have 5% or fewer employees who experience mental illnesses in a year.  Another 22% estimated the incidence of mental health illness to be between 5% and 10%.

Majority of the respondents felt that not enough was being done to improve workload balance and work-based social supports.
