A Happy Worker is a Cheaper Worker

The benefits of having a worker who is highly engaged.

A survey done recently by Hewitt Associates on 115 000 Canadian employees suggests that happier workers tend to be more productive, take fewer sick days, and cost employers less in disability expenses.

Stress affects about 28 per cent of highly engaged employees.  On the other hand, stress affects 39 per cent of unhappy workers.

When employees were asked how many days they missed in the past six months because of emotional, physical, or mental fatigue it was found that organizations with low engagement scores had more than twice as many days off than highly engaged employers.  As a result of this time off a large organization with about thousand employees can spend to about a million dollars a year on disability costs and lost productivity.

When there is lower job stress and a manageable workload the benefits are numerous for employers, especially in terms of a reduction in absenteeism.

Highly engaged employees have better health and well-being.  Employees working at organizations with high engagement have better physical health, lower job stress and work overload, and greater financial stability.
