Shift workers less satisfied with work-life balance

More likely to lose sleep hours, time with spouses than day workers.

The August 2008 issue of "Perspectives on Labour and Income" from Stats Canada has an interesting analysis of shift work in Canada. For instance, women account for only 37% of all shift workers (69% work part time), but are more likely to work rotating or evening shifts.

70% of evening shift workers and 63% of rotating shift workers cut back on sleep to be able to accomplish their daily tasks, compared to just over 50% of day workers.  Shift workers are also more inclined to feel that they are not spending enough time with friends and family.

Levels of dissatisfaction improved with a sense of control over workers' schedules, either through flexibility or regular advanced scheduling.
